La Quinta Cove Street Obelisk Restoration

In 1934, when the first homes in the Cove were under construction, the developer, Walter H Morgan, decided to identify the streets using unusual street markers. The street markers were Obelisks. The obelisks were designed by Peter Urbon. They generally were 4 to 7 feet high with enameled name plates placed on steel backgrounds.

Over the last 70 years, many of these markers have disappeared, but many remain, and these markers are a part of the La Quinta Cove past which needs to be preserved.

The La Quinta Historical Society is developing a program to attempt to restore the obelisks.

Stay tuned for more information on these obelisks.

The name plates would break off and eventually around 1965 they were replaced by new markers with the names painted on the sides.

The first ones with the city logo on top were purchased in September 2002.

A casita in the Yucatan restored the obelisk on their property in the 2020’s.
